Balancing Masculine & Feminine Energy
In the words of Maya Angelou, “A woman in harmony with her spirit is like a river flowing. She goes where she will without pretence and arrives at her destination prepared to be herself and only herself.” These words ring so true for me as I step further into womanhood and understand more truly what it means to be a woman in this world. I am currently in my thirties and understand myself now more than ever, which I guess makes sense, but let me expand.
I know that my yoga practice has played a huge part in this self-exploration, understanding and acceptance of myself. What has also contributed is living during this time of continued empowerment of women, including a striving for equality between the sexes.
I am sure we are all blessed to know women who are pillars of strength and inspiration in our lives; women who light us up, women who have carved a path for us to continue, women who generally make us better humans. This got me thinking about the balance of the masculine and the feminine energy within us all and within all of creation. How vital it is for us to nurture the qualities of both; not only for us to feel complete and whole but for us to understand each other better. Like this we deepen our ability to connect with ourselves and our fellow humans, regardless of gender.
Being a strong, independent female but also remaining soft and receptive is a constant dance, like a river flowing. Moving with grace, with intention, with the ability to expand, all the while remaining open and owning my vulnerability. This is the same play I work with during my asana practice on my mat. It also goes the same way for men too, making space to embrace their softness as well as their strength.
I continue to peel back the old layers of myself and step into the new; more confident, more self assured and with a better understanding of who I am and how I am made up. I deepen my awareness of what it is to be a woman and how blessed I am to be a student of this unwavering practice that is my yoga.
I truly believe that when we find a healthy balance between our masculine and feminine qualities we house an understanding and are able to show up more compassionately with ourselves and with others. We are able to build stronger relationships and make more conscious and authentic choices.
Do you feel your feminine and masculine qualities are in harmony?
My path to yoga began with the practice of asana as a sister companion to my full time investment in dance. I noticed a subtle shift starting to occur when I was choosing to spend more time on my mat. I began to acknowledge a freedom and creative expression through my asana practice that was truly organic and deeply rooted. I was hooked! I continued to delve deeper into yoga philosophy and had the realization that I was leading a life that paralleled many of these ancient lessons. I knew from that point that yoga would be a lifelong companion and guide. The fire in my belly has grown to share my experience and teachings of this beautiful art form.
